There are many, many mold detox protocols available online or even in books. Some of them work, and some of them are, well, junk. We both know you have invested significant time, energy, and money in supplement protocols to recover from mold illness, and we also know that many of those products were ineffective; it’s frustrating when supplements don’t work, but it’s an even bigger issue if they make you feel worse.
Let’s take some time to dive into mold illness and navigate how to use supplements that actually work to help you recover!
Key Principles When Choosing Supplements
A few key principles when choosing supplements:
Start small and use only what you need for a positive effect
Go slow and low (add one thing at a time and work up to full dosages)
Use high-quality sources
Monitor for response and adjust as needed – sometimes a poor reaction is just the wrong dose
Also important to remember is that your body won’t need the same supplement at the exact same dosage throughout your recovery; they will come and go. You may need some for only a short period and others for longer periods. With supplements, no regimen should ever be permanent and should shift over time as your body’s needs change.
If we are going to shift the focus to finding supplements that actually work, we need to understand that mold affects the human body in three main ways:
Mold as a Toxin
Mold as an Allergen
Mold as an Infection/colonization
Mold as a Toxin
Fungus, mold, and yeast all produce mycotoxins (mold toxins) as a defense mechanism and communication system. These mycotoxins can harm other invaders, including bacteria (mycotoxins were the first antibiotics), insects, animals, and HUMANS. One name for mold toxins negatively affecting the human body is Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome. These mycotoxins trigger a cascade of issues and symptoms in the body, including reduced immune function, organ damage, hormonal imbalances, and more.
When choosing supplements to help address mold as a toxin, the idea is to tailor them to your personal needs. As always, work with a mold-literate health professional when needed to guide your journey.
One of the key focuses of supplements that actually work is helping to remove these mycotoxins from the body. Let’s look at how to do that.
Supplements are needed to help these factors:
Move the bowels (if you are having one or fewer bowel movements per day, you need to start here)
Support drainage via the liver, gallbladder, kidneys, and lymph pathways (this is a must early on, once your bowels are moving)
MycoDetox Liver Support – This formula includes silymarin (milk thistle seed extract), artichoke leaf extract, turmeric root extract, methionine, choline, inositol, garlic and dandelion root extract.
N-Acetyl Cysteine – NAC is a source of the conditionally essential amino acid L-cysteine and is a precursor to the tripeptide glutathione, an essential intracellular antioxidant, and therefore supports antioxidant and cellular detoxification pathways in the body.
Phosphatidyl Choline – Phosphatidylcholine (PC) is an important constituent in the cell membrane of ALL cells with far-reaching consequences for the health of the entire body. PC can also serve as a source of choline for the production of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that is essential for normal brain, memory and mood functions. PC also plays an important role in supporting normal liver function and in helping protect the liver from alcohol, pollutants, viruses, and other toxic agents.
Magnesium Malate, Artichoke, ginger, dandelion
Bind the toxins up (This helps to remove the toxins from your body safely; different forms of binders grab different types of mycotoxins).
Bio-Active Binder – A blend containing activated charcoal, Shilajit, humic and fulvic acids and more to support clearance of heavy metals, molds, mycotoxins, and compounds from the GI tract.
Microflora Balance – A shelf-stable, comprehensive, GI formula that includes seven probiotic strains proven to have immune system benefits including Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus paracasei, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Bifidobacterium lactis, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, and Saccharomyces boulardii.
IgG Gut Protect – Purified, dairy-free source of immunoglobulin G (IgG) available as a dietary supplement. Pure IgG helps to maintain a healthy intestinal immune system by binding a broad range of microbes and toxins within the gut lumen.
Mold as an Allergen
This is what most doctors and people think about when they hear the word “mold.” Not only can we be allergic to mold (and most people who are exposed long enough will develop an allergy), but mold will also directly increase histamine production in our bodies.
When histamine levels rise, we experience congestion, red skin, skin flushing, hives, rashes, asthma, eczema, headaches, irritability, loose stools, dizziness, anxiety, difficulty sleeping, itching, burning, acid reflux, and stomach pain.
~ Mold is one of the largest risk factors for asthma, increasing asthma risk by 53%. Everyone with asthma should consider mold as a possible cause. ~¹
This accounts for many of the immediate symptoms we experience from mold exposure. Many people do well with a combination of Histamine Relief and a nasal spray. But some people need more histamine support, so add as required. If you are sensitive, start with Diamine Oxidase (DAO) or quercetin only.
The supplements needed to help these factors:
Lower Histamine (this helps symptomatically but also reduces inflammation and protects our organs)
Histamine Relief – A quercetin, stinging nettle, Vitamin C, NAC and bromelain blend to support healthy histamine levels.
CitriDrops Nasal Spray – A homeopathic nasal spray to address the body’s response to environmental allergens and pathogens at the nasal entry point.
Rutin, Luteolin, Olive Leaf
Feverfew (particularly helpful for headaches)
Diamine Oxidase – DAO (great for digestion or help with reflux).
Improve Digestion (a significant source of histamine from foods or directly from mold)
Digest Assist – A non-mold-based blend of digestive enzymes – Did you know many supplements are grown on aspergillus, a type of mold? When healing from mold, it is important to avoid mold-derived supplements and ingredients, because, when the immune system is in overdrive, anything fungal‑derived may be interpreted as a threat, even if it’s normally harmless.
DAO (enzyme that breaks down histamine in the gut)
Mold as an Infection or Colonization
Mold, fungus, and Candida can grow inside our bodies or colonize and cause infection. We see this often in our sinuses, throat, tongue, skin, lungs, and digestive tract. When we repeatedly inhale and interact with mold spores, they begin to embed themselves in our mucus membranes.
We regularly see our patients and clients with fungal overgrowth in their sinuses, fungal balls on CT scans, and yeast overgrowth in the throat, sinuses, and digestive tracts. Even after leaving the mold, these fungal colonizations will persist, causing ongoing symptoms and inflammation.
While we will support clearing the sinuses early in the recovery process, we don’t get aggressive until a person is out of the mold exposure and has started the detoxification process. Go slow and low and monitor your response.
The supplements needed to help these factors:
Sinus and Lung Health (may burn a little at first)
Digestive Health and Overgrowth (trying to kill candida and fungal overgrowth before detoxifying often results in worsening symptoms. If you didn’t start with the mycotoxins, go back).
Histamine Relief (calms inflammation and histamine)
Digest Assist (supports digestion, reduces candida growth, and reduces biofilm)
Microflora Balance (probiotic to push out yeast/fungal overgrowth)
Chitosan-BioFlav (mycotoxin binder, helps to break down biofilms, fungal overgrowth, and restore good bacteria. NOTE: We use this later as it’s highly anti-fungal and avoid if allergic to shellfish)
Natural Anti-Fungals (oregano, caprylic acid, olive leaf, thyme, copper, iodine) – Candida Rid contains a blend of natural antifungals.
Using supplements for mold that actually work is all about finding what works for you but all while addressing the three main factors of mold illness (toxin, allergen, and overgrowth). If you keep running into issues, it may be time to seek help from a mold-literate health practitioner to guide you on this journey. Sometimes a skilled professional can introduce products at the right time and sequence to provoke better response with less trial and error and reactions.
