Homeopathic Remedies For Mold-Related Illness Encourage the Body to “Heal Itself”

By Dr. Susan Tanner, MD

Because many of the products discussed on this site are homeopathic remedies for mold-related illness and do not contain pharmaceuticals, we receive many questions about homeopathy in general: What is homeopathy? Does it really work?

Many confuse homeopathy with other holistic treatment methods, so I feel it is helpful to give a little background information first.

What is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy was first described in 1796 by Samuel Hahnemann as a method of treating problems or illness with the concept of “like treats like.” In other words, the very substance that made a person ill could also be used in an extremely weak dilution to effectively treat him or her. At the time of Hahnemann‘s discoveries, there was little known about the energetic constitution of the cells of the body. Cells were barely studied under a light microscope and the atomic theories of cellular energy were in the distant future. All they knew then was that homeopathy offered relief to the suffering for a vast array of disorders, including headaches, vomiting, nervousness, flu and others. And let’s face it, it certainly was safer and better-accepted than bleeding a patient or using leaches!   Much later was the actual discovery of cell anatomy, as well as the physics that dictate cell behavior. Then, as cellular charge and response to environmental factors was better understood, the action of homeopathic compounds for healing the body started to be properly appreciated.

The electrical charges of every cell in our bodies are impacted (positively/negatively) by the frequencies contained in each molecule on this earth. The molecular frequency changes according to the dilution of the molecule. What is unique to homeopathy is that the more dilute the substance, the more stimulation it has on the cells to induce a healing effect. Put simply, the weaker the compound the more healing impact it has! With homeopathy, the body is stimulated to heal itself through proper balancing of cellular energy.

If you decide to read about homeopathy online, you will see it called everything from a miracle cure to pseudoscience, to snake oil. It is none of these. It must be considered what we call “evidence-based medicine,” as due to its very nature, homeopathy does not lend itself to scientifically-accepted double-blind studies.   By evidence-based, this means that enough people over time have benefitted from its use without overall negative effects.

Homeopathic remedies have been used for many, many years. For some, they are the mainstay of treatment. For others, they are used as helpful adjuncts to other treatment in many conditions. As a physician, using homeopathic remedies side-by-side with more traditional interventions is the way that I have always preferred to use them, and the way that I have seen the most benefit from their use. Unfortunately, many traditional medicine practitioners do not recognize evidence-based treatments and discount them all. Additionally, as homeopathic treatments are not expensive and not pharmacologic products, we see much push-back on their use, because no one can really profit on their efficacy.

Homeopathic Medicines for Mold-Related Illness

In addressing how homeopathic medicines may be used in the treatment of a mold-ill patient, I would first say that they are one of the gentlest forms of treatment. Someone who is mold toxic is usually highly reactive, highly inflamed, and under a tremendous amount of stress. Thus, in some of the most ill and sensitive patients, the tolerance to some standard supplements and medications is very limited. Even the most miniscule dose of a generally thought of as “safe” medication can elicit a hugely negative response. Homeopathy gives us the ability to slowly and carefully help the cells become open to and respond to healing, which, in turn, helps to start reducing the total body load synergistically. Another huge benefit is that we can adjust homeopathic remedies to individual tolerance with dosage titration and mixture dilution. As these remedies are given primarily in drop form, they offer a wide dosage range, and often the option to dilute further as the patient can tolerate a more potent dose. For some, 5 drops may be just right, while others may only tolerate one drop. The fascinating thing is that one drop of a homeopathic remedy doesn’t make it less potent, or less effective, it just makes it easier for the body to adjust to it.

While there are homeopathic remedies for a multitude of illnesses and symptoms, some of my favorites, because of their gentleness and effectiveness are those that help the body gain tolerance to mold exposure and prevent the storage of mycotoxins in the body. Sinus Defense is one of those products. Not only does it contain extremely weak dilutions of many molds and bacteria that otherwise would gain control of the immune response and cause illness, but it also contains Transfer Factor. Transfer Factor is a term given to a specific group of molecules that are produced by a healthy immune system to protect and build resilience and protection to various infections. While this is usually used in combination with other antifungal and/or antibiotic treatments, it also can be used on its own. Continuing its use long term, even after healed or improved greatly, can offer protection again becoming ill again when accidentally exposed to mold, although never take this as free license to spend time in moldy air!

Addressing Pituitary Damage With Homeopathic Medicine

The discussion of the impacts of molds and mycotoxins on the hormonal system will be the topic of several future articles, but it is important to mention here that the pituitary gland in the brain may become severely impacted by mold exposure. The pituitary is the master regulator for thyroid, adrenal, and sex hormones, and it also greatly affects sleep quality and the immune system. Much of this is done through the production of growth hormone. A very important study by Dennis, Robertson, and Black demonstrated that a large percentage of mold-ill patients had deficient growth hormone production. Taking growth hormone is very expensive, requires a daily shot and is inconvenient.   An excellent alternative, especially when trying to assess the severity of the pituitary damage, is CellTropin. This is a homeopathic formula, used as a sublingual spray, that can help stimulate the production of growth hormone. It also contains Astragalus, an herb that promotes a more resilient immune system and, as an added bonus, better sleep!

Additional Homeopathic Products

I also use combination homeopathic products, such as Pekana Detox, which helps the kidneys, liver, and lymph of the body dump toxins.   Patients who were very ill or those who just wanted a good “clean out” benefitted greatly from this as it is very easy to ease into.   Typically, these drops are put into water and drunk twice daily till the bottles are finished, one can go as slow or as fast as tolerated. It may take some patients 2 weeks and others 2 months to go through the process.

There are many other homeopathic remedies, but these are some that are overall, most helpful to those with mold-related illness. Now that you understand what they are and how they work and may help you, I hope you will be open to adding them to your treatment as part of your healing journey.

Susan Tanner has practiced medicine for over 33 years, concentrating primarily on chronic illness and the impacts on the individual, the family and the community. Her formal education was completed at Emory University in Atlanta, the Dominican Republic, Brooklyn, NY, and Atlantic City, NJ. After starting her family practice, a driving curiosity into why people are made ill caused her to pursue education in Environmental Medicine, completing coursework, exams, and necessary practice years to earn board certification in this area in 2009.   Her own struggles with mold-related illness drove her desire to teach those similarly affected. While in clinical practice, Dr. Tanner wrote and contributed to a number of publications on environmental health, prepared narratives for understanding in legal matters, and researched new techniques for modulating the body’s ability to clear toxins and infections. Now, Dr. Tanner continues to research and learn.   She now has a fitness and health website www.thebodynexus.com, where she writes articles and shares education on utilizing the various body systems into improve overall health.
